Have you ever thought about what your name means, and to what extent its meaning influences your behavior and everyday life, as well as how others perceive you?
We talked about this in the Deep Talk Club on Clubhouse and discovered some fascinating things:
1. Studies show that our initials can influence how long we live, and our name can influence everything from where we choose to live to which partner we choose.
2. Whether consciously or unconsciously — our name is connected to our self-identification and can influence our behavior.
3. Against the backdrop of our name and the other person’s prior experiences, expectations of us can arise and/or attributions can be made.
4. Depending on our background, name, and place of residence, we may encounter (un)conscious biases with real consequences — from housing allocation to hiring decisions.
So the meaning of our name can have a significantly greater influence than we might think on who we embody, what we do or refrain from doing, how we’re perceived, and how others treat us, as well as where we stand privately and/or professionally. It therefore seems worthwhile to consciously engage with this topic and examine which patterns, circumstances, and quirks might be accompanying us.
Use this impulse to reflect on it yourself:
What does your name mean? Do you identify with the traits attributed to your name? Are certain traits reflected in your behavior? What expectations and reactions do you experience in dealing with other people that might be connected to your name?
Initiating proactive change requires that we become aware of certain aspects, influencing factors, and so on. So take the time you need to sharpen your awareness. Remember: Pioneering Spirit – you state the direction of the change!
Be there live when we reflect on topics like this every day on Clubhouse, and feel free to jump in actively too. Here’s the link to the Deep Talk Club on Clubhouse.
