Whether at work or in private life — it happens everywhere. We often sense it because something feels off, but we can’t always immediately pinpoint what’s going on.

Sometimes it’s small, offhand remarks tucked into a subordinate clause; sometimes it’s questions that, on closer inspection, turn out to be leading questions designed to manipulate your answer; and sometimes it’s seemingly insignificant words that make sweeping generalizations and present claims as self-evident. These are just a few examples from a seemingly endless list of techniques people use for self-promotion — to signal expertise and exert power.

Recognizing these techniques, decoding them, and being able to respond appropriately and confidently in such situations requires awareness. What forms can these take, how can we identify them, and what’s really behind them? My research provides answers to exactly that. The academic work focuses on the topic of professionalism in coaching. But the analysis uncovered something I hadn’t expected. Interestingly, on closer inspection, these phenomena also turn out to appear in other industries and fields. So it’s worth sharpening our perception and creating transparency, in order to truly understand.

3 Myths Debunked – When Science Creates Knowledge! | Dr Yasemin Yazan

When Science Creates Knowledge!

Unfortunately, there is a lot of false knowledge on the market. Be it because, for example, research results are misinterpreted or false causalities are made, or because they are transferred to other contexts that were not even the subject of the study.

We pick 3 myths and show what science already knows:

- Why Maslow's hierarchy of needs is not a reliable basis for motivation

- Why personality tests are questionable as a basis for personnel decisions

- Why a quota is needed as an effective measure against Unconscious Bias
