Over the past days and weeks, we’ve talked again and again about how important it is to consciously slow down, look inward, listen, and perceive, in order to (re)find our inner center. From it, we can draw a great deal of strength and energy, and carry that back out into the world as well.
Today, in the Deep Talk on Clubhouse, my aim was to show that the outer world matters a great deal too — for example, in consciously seeking out feedback, comparing that outside input with my own inner sense, and checking how well it fits. With that in mind, today I asked the participants of the DTC room, guided by moderated questions, for their feedback.
Here, just to illustrate, are a few questions I used:
- What values do you feel I stand for?
- What adjectives or traits come to mind when you think of me?
- If I were an object, what would I be? What symbol would represent me?
- What profession would I have if I weren’t doing what I do today?
It’s important not to comment on the content of the feedback in the moment, within the space created for it. It’s not about evaluating, but simply about listening, letting it sink in, and taking what was said with you, to reflect on again afterward. That opens up the chance to align it with your own sense of self and, if you want or need to, make adjustments — not just for the here and now, but also with a view to the question of being in the future (Who am I, and who do I want to be?).
Note: This also ties back to our DTC room, where we picked up and discussed a line from Tony Robbins: “I created this motherfucker standing here” — Tony Robbins, from I Am Not Your Guru.
Possible questions for self-reflection could be:
- What feedback was I given? (Feedback)
- Does the feedback feel right to me (in relation to my values, etc.)? (Alignment)
- Which aspects surprised me? (Discrepancy)
- What wasn’t mentioned that matters to me? (Discrepancy, looking forward)
- What changes in behavior would help make aspects that matter to me visible/tangible/experienceable, both inwardly and outwardly? (Creative power)
- Am I ready to take this step (decision/commitment), or what’s holding me back? (Examining/releasing inner resistance)
- Where do I start? (Prioritization)
Building on this, concrete measures and actions can then be derived in terms of behavioral change and forming new routines, and so on.
This is one way of approaching and handling feedback to align your inner and outer world — and as always, the same applies here: there’s no right or wrong. You’re warmly invited to simply try it out for yourself and gather your own experience. You can always evaluate it afterward… 😉
