Have you ever tried to pull a horse? You’ll quickly realize it’s not possible if it doesn’t want to be pulled.
In everyday life, we all too often try to move people in a direction they don’t want to move in. We try to impose our opinions and thoughts on them, and then we’re surprised when we meet resistance. It often ends in frustration and a lack of understanding on both sides.
Based on their own experiences, everyone sees things through their own individual lens. That’s their reality, one they’ve constructed for themselves. And it doesn’t change just because you tell them it’s different.
And who’s to say your reality is the right one, anyway? It’s constructed too. We all construct our reality based on our own experiences. So let’s step back from the question of who’s right or wrong. Instead, we’re free to hear the other person’s perspective and genuinely try to understand it. We don’t always have to agree, either. In that spirit, we’re allowed to simply let other people’s opinions and perspectives stand, with appreciation and respect. In many everyday situations, no agreement is needed at all.
